I have been saying for awhile we should stop using the word “rejection.” Most of the time material is not chosen because it isn’t what they need right now. Often things get lost on the shuffle.
I have worked both sides of the street. I have been the one “rejecting” what people write, and Ive been the one sending in material. I know for sure that “rejection” is often not about the writer, it’s about what the publication needs at that moment for that issue. That’s all it means.
But here is my challenge for writers. I have well over 1000 “rejections.” That includes times when I got a no response and when I got no response at all. My challenge is to get into four digits worth of rejections. After about 1,000 it doesn’t bother you anymore. The best way to get over negative feelings about someone not buying what you write, is to get more “rejections.”
