Maybe it is the emotion you remember, and fill in the details as well as you can.
A while back I was writing some fiction, and one of the characters had some bad memories. That was part of the work, and I had to create several of them with all the details for the writing project. In inventing those, I found myself starting to believe them true of me even though mentally I knew I had invented them myself. That's just one experience, but it kind of supports what you are saying.
