This a space I’m very curious about as well. I suspect we might be able to learn something from Japan. Books in various short form mobile platforms have been huge there. But, this medium is different (and cheaper to produce as you mentioned), in that that the narrative structure is aimed at short form consumption.

I’m also curious on how much revenue per user these apps are generating. Are they on par with, say, an average Kindle user or paper book readers?
