Chapter Twenty — Endangered
Sitting in an uncomfortable chair at the side of the corridor, Aura was starting to feel nauseous. A stench of filth and disinfectant clung to the hospital air — the odor of injury and ill health.
Missus Adams, who had been chatting incessantly earlier on, had fallen silent. But still, Aura couldn’t quite make out the mumbled conversation that was drifting from the end of the corridor. If she didn’t receive a report on her father soon, she would go crazy. She just needed some good news — any news.
Finally, there was a rustle of clothing, and a nurse strode through a set of double doors, heading towards them.
Aura sat forward. ‘Is my dad any better?’
The nurse paused, her face sullen and pale. ‘Yes. He’s still a bit weak but he’s going to be fine.’
Aura sprang from her chair. ‘Can he come home now?’
The nurse fixed her with piercing, wolfish eyes. ‘He’ll need to stay with us overnight while we run a few tests.’
Missus Adams pulled herself up from her seat, with a grunt. ‘Can we see him, at least?’
