Research suggests that [insert your home town] is the best place to live and work

According to new research by an otherwise unknown company looking to make a name for itself, [YOUR HOME TOWN] is the best place to live and work.

The research company took into account some random statistics about the town, selecting the best to ensure that said town would win. Other less complimentary findings were ignored.

A press-release was written and released by a PR company, who then alerted as many publications as possible about these bogus but feel-good findings. It would include sound-bites from a business man who owns a business there, somebody who’s job it is to promote the town and a typical person who lives there.

The story was picked up by a number of newspapers and websites, especially those based at the town, but also those just desperately looking for page-views to feed their advertisers.

From there, people who lived in the town proudly shared the articles on social networks, feeling good about themselves living in a great place whilst making sure that any friends who had moved from the town were duely chastised for making a stupid decision and leaving.
