Primaries would not be so indispensable, but they’d still be useful to focus attention on the viable candidates. 5–10 candidates, total, is plenty — two each from 2 or 3 large parties, 1 each from 3–5 smaller ones. Ballot access rules should be a bit looser than they are today, but still tight enough to keep it down to this level.
