Dear America: Here’s Your Gun Solution (Updated)

Sara, I somewhat agree with you. I like your vehicle analogy and would challenge you a bit on the reality. Driver’s licenses are a joke. You get one at 15 or 16 years old, when your brain is still processing how to not stumble over your shoes. A concealed carry license requires that you be 21 years old. A drivers license requires that you memorize some inane information that most people cannot remember beyond the test and rarely exercise (how about 4 car lengths to follow on the freeway?). Most people take a drivers test once in a life time with sometimes rare ‘re-tests’ when they turn 60+ years old. To get a concealed carry permit, you take a class, show proficiency in handling and understanding handguns, and take an exam. Similar to a drivers license. Personally, I feel responsible for carrying a weapon and I have 8 years of Marine Corps experience, years of personal experience, and I have undergone extreme weapons training and update those skills. I am proficient. Much like driving. I took a defensive driving course on my own to improve my driving skills. Not many people do -they believe they are awesome drivers and they drive like idiots. The roadways are filled with them — the road-ragers, the makeup applicants, the oblivious text moron, etc. In fairness, the same is true of gun owners. They got scared, took a course, bought a gun, and carry it in their purse without a clue that they can’t actually use it. So, I am all for a more rigorous system for people with concealed carry licenses. I’d like to see more proficient gun carrying owners. It just needs to be an across the board way of ensuring that our drivers are held to the same rigorous standards you have suggested, because currently; they are not. Especially, continued education for drivers — it doesn’t happen. Most states issue licenses based on your previous license as long as you were not egregious in your former state. Concealed carry permits don’t work that way. You need a whole new application process. We might have more ‘licensed’ people if we implement your suggestion, but it won’t guarantee competency. Just look at our education system for that reality. But, if we do start requiring more controls on guns and cars, maybe we can extend this to bicyclists too? Those guys are total idiots too…
