Be a more efficient you…

A short note to self…

You spend a lot of time trying to be more efficient at work. Trying to juggle tasks and responsibilities. You write lists, have digital task managers, organise meetings, set calendar alerts and plan days in advance. You read books and blogs that you think might help, yet work days always still manage to fill themselves. As much as this is to make sure you get done what is on your list, you do this to make sure you have time for things that are important to you. Family, friends, hobbies, side-projects.

But it doesn’t always work. In fact, let’s be honest, it hardly ever works. You still end up working long hours or finishing jobs in the evenings or weekends and no matter how efficient you become, there are always jobs to fill the time. But here’s the issue. In putting all your effort into managing your work life you end up leaving free time to chance. Free time is your time. It’s time with your family, it’s time taking a walk through a Glen, it’s time at just doing what makes you, you. That’s not a good thing to lose.

Even free-time takes effort to plan. But it’s effort that is well rewarded. Put as much time into scheduling your personal life as you do work life. Maybe more. Make commitments and set plans for your personal life and stick to them. Treat family and friends as well if not better than you would customers and colleagues — don’t let them down. Prioritise your life plans and build your work schedules around these. You’ll be happier, healthier and more productive. You’ll be spending your time wisely. You’ll be a better you.
