As I try to practice it, leadership is an act of servitude, not dictatorship. The goal of a leader should be to make the members of the team, and by extension the team as a whole, as effective as it can be in accomplishing its goals. For a specialist (whether that is a software developer, a designer, an accountant, or anyone with a skill) to move in to leadership is not a matter of just getting to tell other skilled professionals in their field what to do. It’s a fundamental change in how that person supports the team. We tend do draw organization charts as a pyramid with ‘bosses’ on top. But I would argue that a healthy company should have the pyramid upside down.
