modern indie grafters

ask most people what they would associate with the label ‘indie rock’ and you’d still probably get an answer from a familiar pool of artists — The Libertines, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, The Fratellis, The Kooks, Kings of Leon, and so on (ad nauseum). indie became a catch-all term for a sound, a marketable buzzword for the major label releases of all of those similar sounding mid 00’s bands. this is clearly at odds with the original meaning of indie — independent bands with a DIY attitude releasing music on lower budget labels.

now that the dust has settled on that era, and despite bloody kasabian still insistent on releasing albums, it’s well worth taking a look at the current crop of ‘indie’ bands who are out there doing their thing in the face of a very uncertain time for music. this playlist contains bands with a diverse range of influences, and a diverse, far more representative array of members.
