Otters

Last night the wind picked up

and you would have been carried away

except

we were holding hands

and the kelp held

I wrapped your body with it, anchored you

to the spot

so I could rest

I trust in the deep

the waves are no match for us

you were buoyed by my love

like a cork

I teach you everything I know

upturned stone and under scales

to get at the marrow

of life

avoid that cove

let the water churn and foam

There is something unabashed in our love

unassailable

my wisp

my pup
