Yesterday, Mike Huckabee announced via Twitter that he would be going on Sean Hannity’s Fox News Show to talk about Trump’s plans to once again violate the U.S. Constitution.
This time, Huckabee said, the plan involved ignoring the fact that we have term limits in this country.
Just for the record: THAT IS NOT A THING.
At least, it’s not a thing under the United States Constitution, as it exists here in the year of our Frigg 2019.
You know why?
The 22nd Amendment.
Section 1 of the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution reads:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.
What was that first part, again?
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President[.]
And, just for the record, there is no “the President and his followers believe conspiracy theories and also the opposition party is very mean” exception to the Constitution.
Huckabee and Hannity later claimed this was a joke, saying they laughed at the hysterical responses to their jest.
I don’t know about y’all, but when I think comedy, my mind goes straight to Mike Huckabee and Sean Hannity.
Anyway, whether Hannity and Huckabee planned this as a hoax all along or just decided to call it one after all of Twitter told them how dumb and wrong they were, it’s fucked up and stupid.
Trump himself has also “joked” about being a permanent president.
BECAUSE IT’S SO FUNNY TO IMAGINE THAT A WANNABE DICTATOR MIGHT JUST DECIDE TO NEVER LEAVE OFFICE.
But seriously, can we all please just agree that it’s not fucking funny for the President and his buddies to announce their plans to form an authoritarian state with no regard for the Constitution?
Especially when the President is already a wannabe tyrant who idolizes murderous dictators?
The fact is, like Trump’s “joke” tweet, comments of Trump remaining POTUS indefinitely are threats. And they’re part of a pattern of threats from the Trump camp that their Dear Leader doesn’t necessarily intend to leave office. Ever.
This isn’t the first time Trump or someone in Trump’s camp has announced the President’s intent to violate the Constitution. Trump was trying to delegitimize our elections before the 2016 election even took place. Since winning the electoral college, he has repeatedly falsely claimed that millions of undocumented immigrants voted for Hillary. (They didn’t.) Trump has indicated, time and time again, that he will do what he wants, democratic institutions be damned.
With a real President in the Oval Office, these types of “jokes” still wouldn’t be funny, but they at least wouldn’t be scary. As much as Fox News and the NRA tried to get nutjobs the world over to think that Obama was going to declare himself King, those of us here in reality knew that nothing like that was ever going to happen. Hell, I hated George W. Bush with the fire of a thousand suns, but I never worried that he would refuse to leave office when his term was up.
But Trump… Trump is a whole ‘nother story.
What these sociopaths call a joke today could easily be on their agenda tomorrow.
One of the only saving graces of the last two years is that Trump and his goons are ineffective idiots. A more capable group of far-right fascists could have done even more damage to the country and constitution than the Trump regime has — and they have already done plenty.,
When the president and his advisors “joke” about lighting the Constitution on fire, they are undermining our democratic system. These threats to our democracy should not be ignored or laughed off. It’s incumbent on all of us to speak out and condemn this as the anti-American bullshit that it is.
It’s very possible that the last two years of Trump’s presidency will be even worse than the first two. Trump is going to be impeached by the House. But he is also going to be acquitted by the Senate. And with that acquittal, he’s going to feel invincible. The Senate will have given its tacit agreement that Trump can do basically whatever he wants, the law be damned.
And we will have at least two years of unbridled fascism.
Despite his impotence, Trump has already done untold damage to our country, our institutions, and the rule of law. The federal judiciary has been destroyed, probably for the rest of my life. Refugees have undoubtedly died because of Trump’s refugee and Muslim ban.
But I don’t know, maybe I’m completely overreacting, here. I mean, it’s not like Trump has ever just blatantly ignored the Constitution and tyrannically threatened U.S. citizens, right???
Yeah, everything is trash.
But, regardless of what the tally comes to in the electoral college, remember decent people who oppose fascism and the human fart in the White House are in the majority.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
