Ah, the delicious irony! We go to “college” to become smarter or perhaps to find a way to do something with our smarts by way of applied thinking in the Arts and Sciences. What actually happens to so many of us at these “institutions of higher learning” is exactly what happens to Ross.
The dumbing down of America happens when our circle of friends proves out A. H. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and we choose the need to fit into a social construct over superior intellectual pursuits and the greater need to exercise our minds! Friends, Animal House, American Pie all give us pause to question whether this is life imitating art or art imitating this great vacuum of life that all of our brains have been sucked into.
Mr. Hopkins, your article is one of the 12 steps in our road to recovery… recognizing that we have a problem. And those of you reading this and thinking “I don’t have a problem” simply need to look beyond the tip of your nose to recognize that WE have a problem. Just read any discussion board on the internet. Go on. I dare you.
