Do you remember when, a few days back, I mentioned that I’d been spending a lot of time working away on some of the more behind-the-scenes aspects of life as a writer?
Lately, much of that has had to do with my newsletter. I recently made the decision to switch from TinyLetter to MailChimp because I wanted to have a bit more control over the design of each letter. (That and the fact that TinyLetter doesn’t let you schedule posts in advance, so, if you want to send out a letter, you have to be around to hit ‘send.’)
I knew about the differences between these two providers going into it, though, and TinyLetter’s fewer features were actually a big part of why I chose them in the first place. I knew that I wanted to start a newsletter, but I also knew that I would never start if my perfectionist self was set loose amongst the infinitely customizable options of MailChimp.
TinyLetter, then, was perfect, because it meant that I didn’t have to worry about any of those things. The back-end was minimal, so I was free to focus on the writing. That early momentum was crucial; if it hadn’t been that easy, I doubt that I would have gotten started at all. (To anyone who’s thinking about starting up a newsletter of their own: highly recommend going with TinyLetter. It makes the entire process feel so doable.)
Long story short, though, I took a few days to design templates, transfer everything over, etc., all of which is now done. Very excited for you to see the new design, which will be launching with tomorrow’s letter. Here’s a sneak peek at the third edition of The Sunday Letters, titled ‘A Theory of Relativity:’
“As I am increasingly coming to realize, the numbers which we use to quantify our lives in the online universes of social media are much more relative than they are absolute.
One photo of yours gets 300 likes on Instagram while the next one gets 30. A celebrity shares a selfie and the likes skyrocket to the hundreds-of-thousands, often even reaching the million-or-more mark. But how much does any of it really mean?”
