How To Trigger Unknown Aspects of Your Psyche

Sometimes we need a little push to tap into those parts of our psyche that need to be investigated. These unknown areas cause us the most pain because we can’t understand why we feel it so deeply. With awareness comes understanding, with understanding comes acceptance and with acceptance comes letting go.

There are so many ways to delve deeper into our subconscious and bring forward the parts of our psyche that need exploration. The key is to find one (or two, or three) that resonate with you.

‘Soul Energy’ Artwork by The Rewrite

Art is now emerging as a powerful way to, as Margaret Naumberg put it, ‘release the unconscious by encouraging free association, without censorship’.

Without censorship is the key here. In order to delve deep we need to feel free, unconstrained and limitless. All possibilities are on the table.

So how can art contribute? Art can help us pin down the core of significance. When engaged with meaningfully, the creation of art and the appreciation of it can speak to the hidden part of you and lead to an accurate assessment of what is truly valuable in your life.

Try this exercise.

Find an artwork in your home or search online for one that resonates with you. You don’t need to know why it appeals to you yet.

Imagine that you are that artwork or that you are in that artwork and complete this sentence.

“I am (artwork) and I am…”

Don’t think too hard, write or speak what you feel. The answer should reveal something about your psyche that wants further exploration.

How did you go?

Did it reveal something you yearn for? Or something about yourself that you didn’t know you valued so much? Perhaps it revealed an area that you want to heal but haven’t been ready to explore. Take this as a sign that you are now ready to trigger that unknown aspect of your psyche.
