For $185, 000 or less, you can get a 3500 sq foot home in a lovely neighborhood in many family friendly and safe Midwestern neighborhoods and save the dollars to out kids through college, travel or put towards retirement. I am in no way knocking California and have friends and family who love living there. But I know others who have returned to the Midwest or moved there to reduce financial pressures.
