McCain has several things to his credit that stand him apart from other Republican politicians. That he rose to the top of a crop of extremist candidates for the presidential nomination wasn’t surprising — even his deluded party members could see he was the only one who would be acceptable to anyone who wasn’t drinking the kool-aid. It has been sad, though, of late, to see him refusing to comment on the southbound trajectory of his party’s politics. The extreme stress of keeping one’s finer sentiments bottled could certainly be the genesis of an illness. As he maintained silence, he began to have the aspect of, perhaps, a cobra who had swallowed something a bit too large to pass. But I was pleased to see him a few months ago in Germany, I believe it was, addressing the NATO member nations and reassuring them that the America they had trusted would still be there for them no matter what. He spoke with passion and intensity, and whatever had been lodging in his throat seemed to have passed. So yes, Senator, we need you. Please get well and let that voice ring loud and clear.
