Hacker Matteo Godi Still at Paul Weiss, Still No Access, Still Lots of Interest — The Tragedy of What Started Out So Promising
Big Law is no slouch about maintaining the website. And when it comes to personnel, it is always up to date. As soon as a lawyer leaves, involuntarily or voluntarily, the profile is deleted.
Well, for hacker Matteo Godi, that profile continues to be up on the Paul Weiss website. There he is an associate.
However, access to him has been blocked. On that profile, there are:
No phone number
No email to click on.
The vCard can’t be downloaded.
I had been able to reach Godi before the drawbridge had been pulled down and the moat filled with alligators. I had asked him if he was still employed at Paul Weiss. He hung up on me.
Desite my lack of access, he and I remain connected through traffic on this blog for articles I posted about his wild caper. That was to hack the Wikipedia pages of Judge K. B. Jackson’s competitors. His objective was to make them appear less liberal and her more so.
The traffic on those analyses continues to be brisk. Here is the post which is receiving the most sustained page views.
Note also that on Google, that particulare article has grabbed a higher ranking than the coverage by Abovethelaw.

But the real story is not the mystery of why he remains employed at Paul Weiss. And, it’s not speculation about how much longer that could or would last.
The unifying narrative is one focused on tragedy. It’s about how engrossing it is for gawkers to observe that such a strong beginning for a junior lawyer at an elite law firm could unravel. Before his hacking, Godi had a crack at important cases. He wasn’t just doing grunt work.
In addition, he participated in an Exxon case about a request for a refund of excise taxes.
What probably postioned and packaged him for those kinds of opportunities is that he had graduated from what is the top law school in the US — Yale. Also, he had clerked for Judge Jackson.
This is just a hunch but I figure his drive also might have impressed the authority figures at Paul Weiss. He had been an immigrant from Italy, yet he had been able to master the peculiar Ivy game of higher education.
The preoccupation among us watchers of the Godi saga is: Can he engineer a comeback? Of course, if Judge Jackson is confirmed for SCOTUS he is a priceless source of information and insight for Paul Weiss on how she prefers cases presented to her and how she structures her decision-making. If he delivers on that in ways that assist Paul Weiss’ clients he could deflect some of the current shame. Maybe all.
That’s because the practice of law is a pragmatic industry. For instance, if disgraced former co-chair of Willkie Farr Gordon Caplan proves useful to his clients (his license has been reinstated) he can bury the past. Currently Caplan is making all the right moves in reputation restoration.
