dun dun dun
when i wake up
well i know i’m gonna be
i’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
when i go out
yeah i know i’m gonna be
i’m gonna be the man who goes along with you
“hey, you know this song?” i ask, turning up the volume
you’re sitting next to me with your feet on the glove compartment
“of course i do,” you say.
“remember where you heard it?”
“shrek? no, benny and joon,” you clap your hands, proud of yourself.
i smile with my eyes on the road
because you know the song from that one kooky 90’s johnny depp movie
we used to watch together when we were way too young to understand it
and not from that one newer, more popular show
that would make much more sense for your age and mine
i smile at this one silly thing that binds us together
such silly things in a string
tie me to you, ear to ear
and that makes me sing like a happy camper.
but i would walk 500 miles
and i would walk 500 more
just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
to fall down at your door
then you tell me to stop singing
i’m ruining the song.
