Practical Advice for Women Beginning Their Computer Science Degree
Nicole Sallak Anderson

Bravo! My son will be starting his journey with you this fall and it is great to read your experience, though your article could be to any computer science student. I have been totally baffled by not only the push for women to go into STEM (but no other male dominated field), but also the demands from women to retain them. I grew up being told I could do anything I chose to so it makes me wonder what girls are being taught now. I was never told I needed representation in the workplace or to be afraid or quit if there was no one else like me in my classes or at work. I find the concept so regressive.

Good luck in your next stage. I think often about going back for a Master’s degree (to teach math or science ironically). Most of my son’s computer science teachers were women and they are the ones who encouraged him to pursue a degree. I look forward to reading more about your journey.
