when

you’re so entirely sad

and have no words for some of it and all the words for the rest of it and other people are playing whack-a-mole looking even for one

word

and those lost and addled

and those who know that the government is waiting for them and they have to leave now and not later now

he, hat and scarf and coat on; insisting they are

waiting

for him

and all you can do is nothing and everything

and wait

and count to all the numbers and breathe through your nose bite yourself hard hard hard

evenutally he takes off his hat and scarf and coat and sits down for dinner

which you cook with one eye on the onions and one eye on the sitting room

to know he’s sitting there

down for dinner
