Tate Britain is home to Britain’s art heritage from 1500 to the present day. It is the oldest gallery (1897) in the Tate Museums network.

The Art Collection

Tate Britain

Tate Britain has an astounding collection of paintings and artwork by renowned period and contemporary artists, not only from Britain and Europe, but also other parts of the world.

The Tate’s policy to educate the public in the culture of the country has prompted sourcing from around the globe and the collection includes paintings from Latin America and Asia. Guided tours are available.

Visitors say: “We visited several galleries in London and this was my favourite. Every room was a new treasure with excellent variety. Featured artists were displayed in chronology of their work and style evolution.” “The free entry gives you 500 years of British art. The building is beautiful outside and in, and it’s a wonderful place to wander, even if you’re not an art enthusiast.”

Artist Rooms

Tate Britain

Tate Britain has artist rooms featuring displays of works by new and renowned artists. There are over 1,500 works of art on display, including contemporary art. Each exhibition is carefully managed, right down to maintaining the right temperature and light to protect the work and optimise its display. A dedicated registrar manages the exhibitions. Details on the website.

Conceptual artists have changed the way we look at art. Everyday objects such as urns and tables are now viewed as works of art. The Tate encourages new perceptions in art and the work of new artists through exhibitions. It has something for everyone and you can take home a memento of your visit from the shop.
