Plastic Shmastic…It’s time to take responsibility!!

Ok, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that our planet is in crisis.

We see documentaries popping up every week now, showing horrific pictures of turtles with straws stuck up their noses and birds choked to death by the careless disposal of plastic bags. Our beautiful sea creatures are suffering horrible deaths due to humans, our need for stuff and our desire for convenience.

Now we are hearing that WE are being impacted by plastic pollution. It is getting into our food, our drink, our bodies…and our children’s bodies!!

Reversing the damage seems like an impossible task (let’s hope not) but what can each of us do to make a difference?

Think about it for just a second.

Forget about the big picture…governments, corporations and all that.

What impact would it have if every person just stopped and thought for a second about their choices and the impact it is having on our planet.

I am not claiming to be a saint…far from it, but what I can tell you is, now that I am paying attention to it, I’m making better decisions.

Here are a couple of the changes I have made so far.

Bamboo toothbrushes and bamboo cotton buds.

The cotton buds were a big eye opener for me. Although I have always put them in the bin and NOT flushed them. I came to realise that it will take somewhere around a gazillion years for the little plastic sticks to break down…if they ever do!

Think about how many of these each of us uses in a lifetime!!

We have taken part in a few beach clean ups close to where we live and that is where you really see the impact of our actions.

Aside from the totally irresponsible litter. Plastic bottles, bags, crisp and sweet wrappers that people dispose of carelessly, there is the “stuff that is flushed.”

Those little sticks from the cotton buds are right up there with the dreaded WIPES!!!

I’m not going to lie, I used to buy them too. So easy to wipe the make up off instead of the whole cleansing ritual before you go to bed…

But I can’t un-see the damage now. Countless wipes tangled up in seaweed as far as the eye can see.

It isn’t enough to say “oh those poor little creatures, isn’t that terrible.”

We need to do something NOW!!

So, I am making a commitment to take responsibility for my part in the whole thing.

Here are a few changes I have committed to and I would love to hear yours too!!

  1. As I’ve already mentioned, bamboo toothbrushes and buds.
  2. No more wipes for skin care OR house cleaning.
  3. Reusable coffee cups or buy coffee where they use compostable take away ones.
  4. Say “no thanks” to straws.
  5. Reusable shopping bags.
  6. No more bottled water (had a filter fitted in the kitchen)
  7. Skip the packaged fruit and veg.
  8. Replacing regular cleaning products with eco friendly ones.
  9. Using containers for wrapping food instead of cling film.
  10. Not buying more “stuff” than I need.

I know that there is so much more I can do, and I will continue to live more consciously.

But I am already feeling better now that I have started taking action.

I hope you will join me :)
