LESSONS

When I was thirteen and enrolled in Catechism class (ELCA Lutheran) one of the lessons cited the wisdom sayings of Martin Luther: “Always put the best possible construction on your neighbor’s actions.” That one resonated and stuck with me. It encouraged keeping an open heart with an attitude toward others implying that most everyone is probably doing the best he/she can. Not to say we should be naive, but in general it was a teaching that has served me well. So thanks, Martin, (you brilliant AND flawed person in history)!

I may already have printed this poem, written 35 years ago, but still works:

GOAL CHART

Six things I choose to never lose, Of Nature be aware

In each exchange of human range, Full presence be my share

To know the terrible found in me, To share the light if I should see, Fiercely fight an evil force. Celebrate transcendence course.

Living feeds such basic needs But passion makes me dare.
