On the morning of August 1st, 2018, Facebook and Instagram debuted their new time tracking feature to their users. This time tracking feature can be found under your account settings in the tab labeled “Your Activity”. The purpose of these new features are to help users with managing their time spent on each app. Within the feature you can manage notification settings, set reminders and view how much time you’re spending on each app. It was stated that the intentions of the time tracking tool and the other account management features were to promote social media usage in healthy ways.

It’s evident that social media experts and their headquarters have acknowledged the obsessive use of social media in unengaging manners amongst a percentage of users. Hopefully, the feature encourages users to become more interactive and make the most of their engagement on their social media apps.

Considering that people will now either cut down or expand their time usage on social media, given that they have the ability to access and manage it, this may call for business to advance their communications strategies on social media. For example by making advertisements and announcements more concise, to avoid the “passive scrolling” issues.

The new feature has not became available to all accounts yet but is scheduled to do so over the next few weeks.
