New Year’s Day News Update with Breath of the Wild voted game of the year, Mercenaries Saga Chronicles announced plus more!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild won the first annual Japanese Nintendo Game of the Year (as voted for by the readers — the previous games of the year were voted for by myself and were Tomodachi Life, Gotta Protectors, Fire Emblem if and Monster Hunter Stories). View the full top ten here.

● ICYMI: Circle Entertainment announced Mercenaries Saga Chronicles for the Nintendo Switch eShop containing all three RPG’s. The developer’s Rideon Japan as good as confirmed a Japanese release (which was always pretty obvious).

Splatoon 2 will add the Octobrush Nouveau (Hokusai Hyuu in Japanese) with Squid Beakon as Sub and Tenta Missiles as Special at 11:00 JST tomorrow (tonight in North America).

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp players today received 20 free Leaf Tickets in their Mailbox from Isabelle, a new set of Log-In Bonuses and some New Year’s Party Packs on sale.

Fire Emblem Heroes added a a 5★ summoning focus with the Special Heroes Azura, Takumi and Camilla in traditional New Year’s garb plus a three-part event today detailed here.

Miitomo saw the return of both “Happy New Year! New Year Fashion” Miitomo Drop stages with a number of items including Kimonos, Wigs and even a Daruma Costume pictured here, free Golden Peacock Feathers and New Year’s Fireworks Wallpaper plus some New Year’s Miitomo Shop items all pictured here.

Super Mario Run added a New Year’s event running until 4 January where the appearance rate of 6★ items such as Gold Daisy, Running Mario, Luigi and Goomba Statues have all been increased.

Ratalaika Games tweeted yesterday: “We’ll have some sweet #NintendoSwitch announcements for 1st weeks of January once we’re back from the Christmas holiday break :D”

COMG! rankings saw another great week for Nintendo with Splatoon 2 at 125, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 94, Mario Party 100: Mini Game Collection at 94, Pokémon Ultra Sun Moon at 86, Super Mario Odyssey at 70, Yokai Watch Busters 2 at 64 and 1–2-Switch at 55.

My Nintendo today added two free wallpapers (sizes for PC, smartphone and tablet). Both are New Year’s Mario designs with both ‘2018’ and ‘8bit’. See pictures for both here.
