Penn State Needs to Give Up On Defending Paterno

It’s been years now since this whole mess with Joe Paterno, Jerry Sandusky and the Penn State football program came to light. JoePa has passed on, Sandusky has gone to jail and the football program has been slapped with it’s punishment. It’s a terrible story that somehow keeps getting worse. More and more evidence of Paterno covering up a MAJOR issue to keep himself and his football team clean keeps coming.

Somehow, Penn State fans want to keep defending their old head coach. They’ve been railing against anyone who calls him a scumbag or wants his statue removed for a while now. It seems like they can’t just let it go and think rationally. Seeing them on the internet or hearing them call in to talk radio, they won’t just let it go and admit Paterno wasn’t a good guy. It’s like a brainwashed cult that thinks the school is the greatest institution in the world that is above any criticism. PSU is a great school but Happy Valley isn’t some magic place made of fairy dust and unicorns. It’s just like everywhere else.

So I’m not saying the football team should have further sanctions or anything. But Penn State needs to stop with the Paterno love and take the statue of him down. A guy who could know what he knew and put football above innocent people doesn’t deserve to be honored like that.
