The contrast between Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces just reaffirms my belief that Sonic Team doesn’t know how to make good Sonic games anymore. It’s got to sting that fans and modders made the best installment of your series in decades. We don’t know that Forces will be bad, but we don’t have any reason to doubt it, either.

Hopefully Sega will learn the right lessons from Mania. Replace the team that has produced duds for twenty years with more people that understand what made the franchise special in the first place. Stop spending millions of dollars on bad 3D renditions of the series and embrace the stuff it can still be good at.

Sonic Mania probably cost Sega next to nothing to produce, but it restored more faith, dignity, and affection for Sonic than anything they’ve ever done. And I’m sure it’s making gangbusters, too. So, Sega: do more of this.
