I was trying to decide the best way to examine my leadership skills before my research and I thought about testing my skills in the workplace. Over the weekend when the department manager was on vacation I felt it was a perfect time to test my leadership skills on the job. No, I wasn’t giving orders or pretending to be in charge since I am only a part time worker. But, instead I was given a different task to see how well my leadership skills are. I was given the job of training a new worker for the day and show them how to properly do the job. I found that with being a leader you must be brave and not worry about being nervous of telling someone if they are doing something wrong. It’s better to let them know early than to let them develop bad habits. I also learned that you have to be a great teammate. You should praise someone when they do good and go the extra mile to make sure you reach the goal together. I feel I have improved, but next time I work with this co-worker again I want to see how they benefited from my advice and see how successful my leadership skills were. From the article I researched, the most important details I got from it was “The best leaders tend to be the best listeners. You need to listen to your teammates and keep open channels of communication with them”. (softworldinc.com) I completely agree wit this quote because you want the people you are leading to feel comfortable asking questions and looking to better their skills. As I continue my research and start to improve my skills I hope It becomes even easier to teach others in the workplace.
