How Marijuana is enforced in the City of Fort Collins
According to fcgov.com, The City of Fort Collins works collaboratively to manage the use of marijuana in the area. Bringing together various City departments to establish and enforce regulations. For the most part regulations being satisfactory.
Rules and regulations are not much different in Fort Collins than they are in the rest of Colorado. In fact, since marijuana became legal in 2012, the rules on marijuana have not changed much. Though dispensaries have grown. Here are the rules and regulations of the consumption and possession of marijuana provided by the City of Fort Collins.
(a) Any consumption of recreational marijuana that is conducted openly and publicly is prohibited.
(b) Any consumption of medical marijuana that is in plain view of, or in a place open to, the general public is prohibited.
© No person under twenty-one (21) years of age shall consume or possess recreational marijuana.
(d) No person under twenty-one (21) years of age shall consume or possess medical marijuana unless he or she is a patient or primary caregiver in possession of a valid registry identification card pursuant to Article XVIII, Section 14 of the Colorado Constitution.
(e) No person shall possess more than one (1) ounce of recreational marijuana or more than two (2) ounces of medical marijuana.
(f) The possession or consumption of marijuana shall not constitute a violation of Subsections © and (d) if such possession or consumption takes place for religious purposes protected by the first amendment to the United States Constitution.
Now while all of these rules are understandable, I personally believe that (a) and (b) are too strict. I believe that if you are 21 or above you should be free to smoke publicly, even if it’s in plain view. Nonetheless, I do believe that you should be required to keep15 to 20 ft. of separation between you and another person while smoking. The distance created will help protect individuals from secondhand smoke, which like cigarettes, can also be harmful in marijuana.
On the other hand, I also realize that it can be challenging to keep fifteen to twenty feet of separation between you and another person in a population of 158,600. Therefore, another suggestion would be to have designated smoking areas around the city. This would help initiate an up-rise in marijuana culture in the city of Fort Collins.
