My old man introduced me to many important concepts (about virtue, finances, grit, and everything in between) in my younger days, which I’ve followed, tweaked, and tried to develop further for myself.

One of the best things my Dad ever did for me was to take the money I earned from my summer internship in high school and place it in 2011 Apple stock in my very own Roth IRA.

He taught me a lesson in delayed gratification: that small acts of financial discipline build into real lasting security. And from that security comes financial freedom.

Psychology, Not Money, Is the Goal

This kind of freedom allowed for a more positive outlook on spending money. Too often, money goals are associated with negative purchases.

This year, I want to finally pay off my student debt.

I just want to make rent payments on time.

Instead, money goals should be associated positively as a means to do what you want with your irreplaceable time — eat out at that Michelin star restaurant, get Spotify premium, buy that camera you’ve always wanted.
