We are living in a world that constantly floods us with outward images and exposes us to the upwards of 4,000 ads per day. We are constantly receiving information, yet, it is often given without context and seeing only the surface can lead us to believe in a mentality of scarcity.
A scarcity mentality refers to people seeing life as one finite pie, so that if one person takes a big piece, that leaves less for everyone else. When resources are limited, information hoards, micromanagement ensues, and generally, short-term thinking is the norm.
A study on middle-aged adults, done by researchers at Yale University showed that those with more positive beliefs around aging lived 7.5 years longer than those with less positive self-perceptions of aging.
Both abundance and scarcity are inner states that manifest as your reality. When we are abundant thinkers, we see material things as material. Tangible items that don’t really hold power over us unless we let them.
Acknowledging the good that is already in your life is the foundation for all abundance.
A mindset of abundance doesn’t mean that we have unlimited material resources in life. It means that deep inside, we feel that we deserve good things in life and are grateful for opportunities that we have with no problem sharing.
On the same token, it also doesn’t take away the pain of disappointment or make one less likely to be hurt or taken advantage of. In fact, it may put you at greater risk. But with that risk, comes the reward of a deeper level of purpose and fulfillment in a life that is greater than yourself.
Soon after one starts giving, they will start receiving. You cannot receive what you don’t give.
Outflow determines inflow.
Try this: Whatever you think people are withholding from you — give it to them. It could be things such as your time, attention or love.
Start small today by identifying 1–2 things that you may be withholding from others. How do you think has influenced your relationships or performance?
