The Generalist’s Manifesto

The Generalist’s Manifesto

You’re an important part of society, and with the diverse experiences you’ve garnered a thriving world will grow. Whilst at the basis of our world, our working life is geared towards specialists, there exists a place for generalists. The world we live and love in can be a hard place for generalists to exist, so in accepting who you are as an infinitely curious individual therein lies your true power.

There are no illusions here, you’re facing an uphill battle towards something that cannot be considered an haven, however you’ll find solace in other generalists around you.

I encourage you to reach out and find those around you who are generalists, to offer support to those who are still reconciling not fitting into the specialist mould.

  1. Become an unapologetic generalist, never concede to only doing one thing, nor apologise for not specialising. You are a specialist generalist, a paradox of society and capable of offering unfathomable value. Say this out loud, tell yourself this.
  2. Remember your power lies in your passion for depth and breadth of knowledge.
  3. The intellectually curious will become generalists, and in this they will find depth.
  4. Embrace tinkering, tinker with ideas, code, cars, bike, everything around you.
  5. Seek to constantly learn, broaden your skills, and embrace new ideas through experience.
  6. Ensure your knowledge in impassioned when giving back to society, give back with all of your heart.
  7. Seek out other generalists with the view to form collectives, supporting each other in your broadening skill-sets, minds, and souls.
  8. When you’ve found those like-souls, band together in your broad and different disciplines of thought, method, and focus.

There is a type of pressure that is pushing you together as generalists, the core of this is the innate passion for exploration, you and those around you are pioneers, engineers, and instigators of the future.
