Some of the best advice I ever got was from my publisher, who told me: “The moment the final edits are completed, you become a small business owner and you have one product to sell.” I think this is true for anything you want published, book or essay. Not only do you have to push and market and shamelessly self-promote (Bitter Taste of Dying, out now by the way) but publishers won’t even entertain the thought of your book if they don’t think you’re going to do these things. I’m not sure there’s another industry that won’t allow you inside unless you’re willing to do their job for them, but hey — whatever.
