Best Queer TV
If you belong to a marginalized community then you’re familiar with the lack of representation in TV/film. Most queer content is just terrible. The writing, plot, directing etc… Queer media is constantly struggling to visualize authentic, nuanced stories that are not coded in tragedy, male gaze, and/or death. With that said there are a couple *gems that not only stand out but are paving the way for an era of genuine story telling. Surprisingly, most on the list are created by queer or diverse people. Who would have thought?!?
Orphan Black
If you’re not aware of this niche science fiction prodigy, it’s a Canadian show on BBC America. The premise is somewhat straight forward exploring the science fiction world of cloning. They do a great job getting into the scientific nitty gritty but the characters make the show. One phenomenal, Emmy winning actress, Tatiana Maslany plays 5+incredibly, distinct characters who are genetically identical. Each has entirely different back stories and personalities. One of the clones, Cosima is a clever, lesbian, scientist who points out her sexuality is the least interesting thing about her. Cosima along with friend Felix make the perfect gay sci-fi family. First five seasons are up for viewing on Amazon prime!

Steven Universe
Steven Universe is the only animation on this list and it’s a total gem. Steven Universe is a delightful, heartfelt adventurous tale of a boy living with his 3 magical, super hero, alien, aunts. It’s by far the most enjoyable show I’ve seen in an awhile. The creator Rebecca Sugar wanted to create a show depicting an array of diverse people and stories for children. She pointed out as a child she loved Disney movies but never felt like her life as a bisexual woman was shown. You can check out season 1–3 on Hulu and don’t be shocked if you cry more than once.

Please Like Me
This absurdly underrated show is an Australian series created by comedian Josh Thomas who’s just the best. Josh is a twenty something living in his divorced parents home trying to figure out life while he kinda takes care of his depressed mother. This is a dark comedy that confronts many real life issues. It unfortunately, doesn’t have a very diverse cast but it has a surprisingly interesting sense of humor and emotion. This show was voted the best show for millennials by some Australian, Buzzfeed-like site. The entire series is on Hulu.

Sense 8
This is one on the craziest shows you’ll ever watch! This is another science fiction show on Netflix that’s a little trippy but has awesome characters. The show follows 6 people located across the world who are connected through all of their senses. They can see what the others see, hear what the other hear etc… This has the most diverse cast of the list consisting of different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender, and religions. The main take-away of the show is no matter how different we may seem we are all human and connected. This show doesn’t receive enough love compared to the other Netflix originals, so check it out!
