5 things I wish someone told me about furnace replacement
I moved into a new house a few months back, and in an attempt to cut costs, I bought a used furnace from a friend. The ‘friend’ swore that the furnace was in perfect working condition and it would feel no different than a new one. I was so focused on saving money that I overlooked a lot of important things.
In just a few weeks, the furnace started giving me trouble. What’s worse is that I convinced myself that it was only a minor problem that may be happening because the furnace is old. I got it repaired. It worked fine for a week, then went back to being its old self again! Finally, I did myself a favour and got a new one.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of getting the old one repaired once again, but thank God I didn’t. I bought my new furnace from Aire One, and I was rather surprised when the installation mechanic told me this about furnace replacement.
1. If your furnace has been in use for more than 10 years, it’s time to bid adieu.
How long have you been using the furnace that you have? In my case, ‘I’ had been using it since only a week, but when I actually enquired with the friend I bought it from, he said he’s had it for 11 years! That’s a long time. Although most companies claim that the furnace lasts for around 12–15 years, Robert, the installation mechanic, said 10 years is the ideal time to get it replaced.
2. Are you paying attention to what your furnace might be trying to tell you?
Robert said I should take this one literally. The furnace making too much noise should be taken as a sign that it want to tell you something. A furnace repair technician is the best person to decode your furnace’s emotions. So, call for help right away.
3. Has your energy bill surprisingly gone up?
I hate to admit, but I had become an expert at making excuses about this one! It was a bit of a relief when Robert told me that I wasn't the only one, but I did realise how serious the problem is.
Your furnace consuming too much energy is bad for the environment, not safe for you and the house and also the furnace itself. The best way to find a solution for this is to call a repair technician, and get it repaired or replaced ASAP.
4. Is your house always too hot or too cold?
What’s the whole point of having a furnace in your house if it doesn't keep the temperature the way you want it, right? If you’re fretting around most of the time because it is always too hot or too cold, it’s time to give replacing your furnace a serious thought.
5. Buying a new furnace is simpler than you think.
Seriously. I can tell from experience. I was actually worried about how and what I should be buying, but the whole thing was so much simpler than I thought.
I don’t know about other places, but the guys at Aire One are really cool and helpful, and that made the whole ‘buying a new furnace’ thing so easy for me.
Having your furnace run properly is very important for a lot of reasons. If you’ve been putting it off or haven’t given it a serious thought, I’d suggest you do right now. Furnace replacement is one of those few things that you’d never really regret.
