Pride Fund to End Gun Violence Statement on Georgia Special Election
WASHINGTON, DC, June 20, 2017 — Pride Fund to End Gun Violence PAC — America’s only national LGBTQ political organization focused solely on gun violence prevention — offered the following comments on the recent election results in the Georgia special election. Pride Fund endorsed Jon Ossoff as a candidate in March, provided campaign and fundraising support, and helped mobilize supporters to get out the vote throughout the primary and the general election.
“The choice was clear in this hotly contested special election. Karen Handel is blatantly anti-LGBTQ and touted her “A” rating from the NRA,” said Jason Lindsay, Executive Director of Pride Fund. “Pride Fund is disappointed with Jon’s loss, but we will be spending the next year and a half holding Karen Handel accountable to the voters of Georgia’s 6th, to parents and families, working people, and the LGBTQ community.”
“Karen Handel’s abysmal record on LGBTQ equality and common sense gun safety reforms makes us confident that she is vulnerable when she goes up for re-election in 2018, and when she does, Pride Fund will be ready,” Lindsay continued.
“Gun safety and LGBTQ equality are winning campaign issues and it is possible to beat NRA-backed candidates with grassroots support, just ask former 23 year Congressman John Mica from Orlando who was defeated by Pride Fund to End Gun Violence and Stephanie Murphy after he took a campaign check from the gun lobby just 48 hours after the Pulse shooting that impacted his constituents. We can and we will elect Democrats who stand up for all Americans,” said Lindsay.
Jon’s narrow defeat tonight in a historically red district of a deeply Republican state proves that Democrats can win when they run on progressive values and stand up for Americans’ civil rights and safety.
In 2017, Pride Fund will continue our efforts in state races in Virginia and New Jersey. We need allies in the governor’s mansion and statehouse if we plan to pass pro-LGBTQ, pro-gun safety policies,” said Lindsay.
