I suppose it’s similar to the modern status quo regarding nuclear weapons. The only thing that could beat a dreadnought battleship was another one. The amount of money spent on nukes is ridiculous, and could be spent on conventional forces which would be more likely to see use.The key difference being that battleships weren’t deployed because their loss would be too much of a victory for the enemy. Nukes aren’t deployed because once the dust clears only cockroaches and twinky bars will be left standing
