“OpenBazaar is free in all the ways that count and costs money/knowledge in all the way that don’t.”
That. That’s precisely the part that bothers me. Example: I’m trying to get my wife to use OB instead of eBay and craigslist.(Among other people) I can set up a server (not that I ever have before opening my own store, but I got there), am learning about maintaining one as I go and know enough about Bitcoin to make use of the earnings. The barrier to entry for me is roundabouts a waist-high shrubbery. For my wife, though, it might as well be the bloody walls of Byzantium and absolutely does count. You could make a strong case that the actual barrier is her lack of self-confidence to learn the necessary skills. Fair enough. Still, there are plenty of services (craigslist) that don’t even require those skills or upfront costs (minimal though they be) and look friendlier to an outsider from a wider userbase.
I am glad to hear that there are ports going to mobile platforms; that’s a important move and big kudos to you. It will certainly cut down on some of my arguments here. Plus I get that you can’t roll out every feature all at once. Things take time. I do however stand by my statement that no cost or requirement should be considered irrelevant. You have to make decisions about which ones are going to be in play, because some always will, and what that will say about your audience/userbase. OpenBazaar is not a platform accessible to everyone.. yet. I believe you’ll get there. It just feels dishonest to claim that it is one now.
