An UPDATE on what I did!

In March of this year I wrote an article with the title: I Need a Job, but I’m an Entrepreneur and don’t want one

At the time, I was in my final semester of my college career. A college career which spanned 5 years.

During these months, I was searching for a career or even just a job. I went to several sessions with a career counsellor, who I might add was incredible. Still I couldn’t find anything that grabbed me.

I was applying for 3–5 jobs a day. I put some effort into them but I didn’t really go all in like I did when I went to New York. Read about that here:https://medium.com/@jasoncfox/how-i-found-my-passion-and-hated-it-48310ad83c56

I even used my old technique of cold calls and cold emails. I received a couple of phone interviews but again nothing solid.

Being from Australia, the whole immigration debate in the U.S didn’t help. Eventually I was forced to move back home.

After moving home, I started working in my Dad’s logistics business. Mostly just loading and unloading trucks. It was a job just to earn some money while I looked for my real career.

My search continued to be fairly stale. I made several cold calls and wrote several cold emails, companies were impressed but none of them had any openings. I was also trying to apply for positions that simply didn’t exist. After 5 years of school and all the experience in between, I knew what I was good at. I knew what I wanted and I thought that there would be suitable positions for such skills.

There wasn’t….

What Next?

So, after deliberating for a few weeks my Dad came to me with a unique offer. He was in the process of taking on a new computer system which I have used before. It was an opportunity to earn some pretty decent money. During the same time, I could look for my true calling.

During the decision, period My Dad and I drove down to Sydney. We had to unpack my brother’s apartment. This drive was approximately 10 hours there and 10 hours back. Plenty of time to reflect and talk.

On the drive, we discussed my next steps on what we could do, however, no real plan was formed. Upon arriving We met with old friends, I told them what I did in America and what I learnt during my 5-year stint. They were impressed with my knowledge. They said why don’t you start your own business….

This seed was planted days earlier but it hadn’t really developed…

We did all that we needed to down in Sydney and drove back. During that time, we spoke hypothetically what name we would name the business, how we would structure it and the plan to make it happen.

This was all hypothetical so I never thought it was possible.

The day after we got back a family friend asked me to come and have a look at his business. He wanted a website, Facebook page etc. I said yes instantly and thus my company was born without me realizing.

My DNA is entrepreneurship. My Dad hasn’t worked for someone in 30 years. My Grandpa created the first solar hot water system in the Philippines. My Mum always has businesses on the go. My brother will be a Real Estate agent. It is obvious that my DNA is not fit for a job.

Hence…. JCF Media Pty Ltd. Founded and Directed by Jason C Fox.

I now own my own business and am doing everything I can to grow it. I still work for my Dad from 7–4:30, but from 6–12/1 I work on my own business. It will be like this for the next couple of months until I can secure enough work to replace my current income.

Every day I wake up extremely excited for the opportunity to grow my business. I may only sleep 5–6 hours a night but my energy and happiness could not be better.

I may not have the right to give advice being only 23, but if you have a chance to own and run your own business, just fucking do it!!!
