I’ve been interviewing design candidates recently so this is a point I’ve been thinking about quite a lot. I agree that it’s bad to try and get a design candidate to try and solve your complex problems that require a lot of domain knowledge and research. However, I think there is value in asking a candidate to think through and “solve” one of your companies smaller problems. If a candidate can’t break it down and ask questions to gain context in an interview then how will you know if they can do it when they start working for the company? I honestly don’t know the right answer, this is just something we’ve been playing around with.
