The rhetoric around the Millennial workforce and how we are all making things worse.
I’ve been doing a lot of generational research…way more than normal lately and it’s fascinating. Not only as a CEO of a marketing agency but as someone who deals with every generation every day. I have to switch my thinking and communication constantly.
For a while, I admitted to being part of the millennial generation, and I still am in a few aspects. I now relate more with a ‘Gen-Z’. So why have I aged down?
The workplace
Mindsets are meant to be questioned, curiosity is a healthy fact of life. This is all you did as a child, but at some point, we stop encouraging curiosity. This is the first in a long line of problems we face in order to answer questions about the workplace.
What’s been happening as of late comes from millennial’s having curiosity. They want to understand why? With so many inefficiency, it’s no wonder the generation is asking questions.
If baby boomers (our parents) would remember a few years ago when we were in the K-12 machine…we were pushed to succeed, have an opinion, and be the best version of ourselves. Guess what, we listened.
So now the dilemma…
Workplace dynamics
Case and point, this was drafted in about 5 different locations and settings throughout my day. If I have access to internet, I have access to work. Cell phones were a faux-pas only a few short years ago and now we are addicted to them.
The rate of change is hard for some businesses to keep up, but they have too. Instead of being adverse, ask questions, learn, study what’s happening. Read more than headlines. Your romantic outlook on your business is hindering your mindset to adapt and succeed.
The Good ‘ol Days are not coming back…
Workplace as people
When was the last time you stopped and considered the fact you work with People? It’s easy to say you do, reality says a different story.
Anyone in your office is going to have an opinion, idea, or want to seek out an opportunity. Millennial’s have been brought up to ask questions, vocalize, and wonder why we are still doing it the same way 30+ years later. And because of this vocalization, headlines dominate mis-information about a generation.
When was the last time you asked a questions to your staff instead of reading a headline or consulting with someone about how to fix your problems?
We are a society of tactics and reactionary thinking which keeps us from seeing a broader picture and collectively growing the office environment to make sustaining changes.
Agile Workplace & Workforce
So let’s start making changes and having conversations. Instead of creating friction by saying dumb things, ask questions to create dialogue. Not all ideas are great, this we know. The problem is businesses won’t listen to any idea.
You started your business to stand out, fix problems, and innovate the market. Well the market and innovation are still moving forward. But like I mentioned above — at a certain point, we stop encouraging children to have curiosity.
