I sang of books, and pages turned
Upon the antique shelves —
But I felt small beneath the mysteries
Into which scholars delved
I sang of love, and love I found
A tender thing and sweet —
But still I longed for a stranger’s touch
Whom I had yet to meet
I sang of law, and glory won
Inside the courtroom doors —
Then I came outside and looked upon
A world much like it was before
And if of peace I now should sing —
What peace would come to me?
Show me a life I won’t despise
So I can let it be.
