‘I wasn’t gonna fight in a skirt’: the ongoing battle to end sexism in the Olympics

The author chose a poor example to illustrate the larger point. Is there sexism? Of course. Is Brown an example of that?

Think Progress has made an argument before that media, specifically sports media, owes it to women to give them an arena in which to compete even if there were no audience for it.

The example here is boxing. But what if we were dealing with, say, hackysack? If a group of women wanted to compete at the Olympics in a hackysack tourney, does the Olympics owe it to them to show it? The boxing weight classes are established because they have the level of quality competition to justify it and the audience to support it.

The Olympics are only the sum of events happening at national level. Within nations, women should mobilize to support these types of events and make them more popular among their countries.
