I am working from the assumption cybernetics holds the answers to why cybersecurity is a miserable failure. Based on my conjecture, I have so far covered three elements of specific elements of cybernetics: Systems, Feedback Loops, and Regulation & Control. Now, I want to dig deep into Information and Communication.

Admittedly, I am biased when it comes to communication. Perhaps one of my most favorite phases in my tech career was focused on networking engineering and network security. Therefore, for me, understanding and securing the flow of information is at the heart of cybersecurity. This includes securing communication channels, protecting data at rest and in transit, and maintaining confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data. Deeper than this however, I actually enjoy protocols. The equivalent being how we communicate and the rules governing the mechanisms enabling communication.

Those can be abstract concepts to handle, though. I suggest we look once again to the natural world for some inspiration and examples.

Let’s delve into Information and Communication by using one of the most intricate and…
