Love that you tackled this important issue. You have some very good ideas as well in helping those desperate enough to type a few simple yet powerful words into a search engine.

I fully agree with your sentiment about the current rote mechanical responses from the search engines. It reminds me of Josh Clark’s insightful research on machine-learning/A.I. and how far too many algorithm’s have an overconfidence problem.

In a desperate scenario like this is when we need machines to assume the least. You have some great suggestions on how to present proper messaging to these specific humans in need of compassionate, empathic guidance at a level they’ve never needed more in their lives than now!

I do agree with Willi on doing further research on the icons like smiling iconography may not sit well with those in these desperate situations.

I also would revisit the hover option and reveal the top 2–3 keywords without need to hover as this would only be effective on non-touch screen devices.

Again, thank you for tackling this and all the thoughtful research you put into this. Google should hire you!
