A Not So Nice Note On Personal Branding
Some serious advice ladies and gentleman regarding Personal Branding — the way you use social media to package yourself to the world! Like it or not, you are online today a commodity no different from Coca-Cola or Red Bull.
If you dread what I am telling you and choose to not heed my advice; yet still aspire to work in any aspect of education, business or entrepreneurship or in the mass media or the creative arts or knowledge work and ignore these words then you are like a Vincent van Gogh on Crystal Meth- a hermit creating for no one.
Simply stated, you are what you post! You are how you present yourself to the world; and not just employers are taking notice. We live in global community.
Posting sexist comments, off color remarks, and hate speech masked as humor; won’t fly anymore because everyone is watching. The age of political correctness and political incorrectness; freedom of speech for the sake of freedom of speech is officially dead. Mark my words — everything you say and write today across any communication device is becoming a matter of public record – and the world will hold you accountable.
Nobody is perfect, but at least try to be intelligent. Digitally documenting your debauchery and hedonism is dumb. 420 where it’s illegal is a red flag to big brother. I know a tattooed man who openly brags in the workplace about his proclivity for Cannabis consumption — guess who always gets big brother’s monthly drug tests?
Unless you aspire to be a stripper, bikini model or a dude that lets it all hang out with them — turning your personal Facebook, LinkedIn, Google +, Tumblr, and Instagram (Instaporn) account into a Tinder App recruitment tool aka a way for you to Kick it! Or a way for you to relive 50 Shades of Stupid or Dungeon Porn fantasies — is a very bad idea! Think before you post anything.
Remember online just like in life you are who your friends are. Friending everything in a thong — is telling the world you are a CREEPER — remember your Mom and your Grandmother know that you are friends with Tiffany Tickles the stripper from the Girls of Galveston Club.
In summary, do not post anything even with privacy settings on — if you would not want the world to know about it.
