mash’Allah this is very well written, very lucid.
“ So I want us, as individuals and as a community, to think about what it is that we really want from our masajid, from our imams, our shayukh? Because what we have right now is the cultivation of a culture of infallibility that chides any and all attempts at and for accountability and critique. To be told, over and over again, about the wisdom of scholars and how our tradition tells us to respect scholars completely not only ignores how often scholars were challenged (by each other and by others) but how even the first communities of our faith held one another and themselves accountable. The Rashidun (RA) didn’t rule as rulers — but as servants to their communities.” — This to me is perhaps the most necessary and absolutely courageous of all to say.
May Allah (swt) rectify our situation. Perhaps they acted when they learned that the teacher was leaving the country (it could have been a detail they were not privy to) thus, they may feel as if someone was trying to flee justice and responsibility. Allah (swt) knows best.
