Set goals, live your dreams
It’s not about the moonshot but about the ride to get there
I’m now entrepreneuring for more than 15 years and I have met a lot of awesome like-minded people. People that start with a dream, and an idea. They are (extremely) good in what they do and they know how to monetize their skills. Most companies are started by freelancers c.q. contractors, but 70% of them stop with their business within the first 4 years! You aren’t a quitter, right? I hope I can inspire you to set your goals, to live towards your dreams!
Congratulations to you if you just getting started or survived the first 3 or 4 years. Those years are the hardest. The challenges of getting a stable revenue, income, customers and getting the word out. That’s all about multitasking and the hustling! But you’re probably not ready to retire. So what do you truly want?
We are all different kinds of people but from a science perspective Carl Jung, the father of analytic psychological (theory of psychological types), developed a test in the early 1900s. Tests that draw on this theory sort people into 16 different categories which are organized by four pairs of opposite types. In addition to the insights provided by each individual pair, the 4-letter type as a whole can provide additional information when the specific combination of types is taken into consideration.
These pairs are:
- Extraversion (E) and Introversion (I)
- Sensing (S) and Intuition (N)
- Thinking (T) and Feeling (F)
- Judging (J) and Perceiving (P)
I’m a great fan of this sort of personality tests because it helps you reflect on yourself and help you understand someone else’s behavior. It can be a way to channel your feelings and put them down into words. Life is all about relationships, but most relationships are with your inner person. If you truly understand yourself and others, it will empower you to aim for your goals. Also, when you understand your own pros and cons, it gets easier to work or live together with other personalities. I believe you should be open to all kind of different personalities, with give you the power to reflect on matters from all kind of different perspectives.
Personally I use https://www.16personalities.com/ and it’s free! It’s takes only 15 min to do so get some time to reflect 🙂
As a founder of a business you often see that your personal core values will be quite similar to the core values of your company. Everything in life comes back to your values, the ones your parents taught you (or didn’t). Those values shape and define you. So, when you start a company, culture is one of the first things you need to think of and talk about. You and your co-founder(s) are the people who started the company, so make sure your values are aligned!
What core values are important to you? Here is a list of 500 different values http://www.threadsculture.com/blog/company-culture/core-values-list-threads/ Which 3 to 5 core values can you define for yourself and for your company?
Goals vs dreams
“Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all”
I suggest that you make your dreams your goals and your goals your dreams. Do something that makes you happy for at least 80% and that you can monetize in a way that is comfortable for you. This way you don’t have to stress about it and you can keep focused on your dreams.
You started this company because you, as a person, got an unfair advantage against your neighbor. You do it because you love doing it, not just for the money. Keep improving your skills and try to be better every single day. This is necessary because someone else will replace you if you don’t grow.
Think about why you started this company. What is that big goal / dream of yours? Why do you give everything for this company? Maybe you want to make the world a better place or you want financial independence? Maybe you want to have a Porsche, or you want to go traveling for 6 months before you turn 40? You want to make good money by just working 20 or maybe 10 hours a week? You want to solve a problem that no one has solved yet?
Here’s what you can do to prioritize your dreams. Make a list of your dreams/goals in life and give them points on a scale from 1 to 100, give 10 points extra to the ones that match with the reason why you started your company. Prioritize them to a maximum of 3 by focusing on the ones you can achieve in 3 to 5 years.
How to get there?
You know now;
- Your personality type
- The reason why you started this business
- Which values are important for you and your company
- The goals that merge with your business you want to aim for in the next 3 to 5 years
Put a date next to your dream(s); for example 1st of August 2022. If you can measure it, you can track it! Now we’ve written down a plan towards it, but it is never a straight line! So, make sure to track and adjust it every 3 months.
So if it’s the 1st of August 2017 today where do we want to be on the 1st of August 2020? Write it down in a way that you can answer it in a yes or no question to tell yourself if you reached that point. On the path to that where do you want to stand on the 1st of August 2018? Write it down and now do that for every dream/goal you have.
But remember: a plan never goes as planned, so be prepared to be flexible and to adjust.
So we know where you want to be in 1, 3 and 5 years. What are you going to do about that this quarter? What do you want to achieve these three months? Look at every goal and make a list of them. Prioritize them on a scale from 1 to 10! Remember after 3 months you should be able to answer yes or no if you were able to get to this challenge.
So, prioritize this list to max five challenges (less is also fine) and get started! Schedule some time in your calendar every week to work on your dreams and aim for that growth.
Measure and keep on track
Do something nice at the moment of reflection every 3 months and reward yourself for working on your business. Share your dreams with your loved ones and share your progress. Remember this is your dream and your life so you‘re the most important person in that, no one else can judge that. Sometimes a plan needs adjustment, sometimes you need to kick yourself to work a little bit harder, but the most important thing is that you do what makes you happy and you stay healthy!
Please share me your progress and dreams that you‘re chasing! Would 💚 to hear your feedback!
