When receiving ambiguous news, one response I’ve been testing out is, “And how do you feel about that?” That way, I can collect more information about how the person is doing and whether congratulations, condolences, or both are in order.

And then I immediately scour my memory bank for a time something similar has happened to me so that I climb down into the deep hole with them.
